Marshall L. Windmiller Short Snorter
The Short Snorter Project
Marshall L. Windmiller served in the 835th Signal Service Battalion
during World War 2 as a radio operator. While in New Caledonia
he was accepted into the Army Air Corps cadet program, and
returned to the United States aboard an
Air Transport Command
aircraft along with other prospective cadets. The first he ever
heard of a short snorter was when a crew member walked
through the plane and invited the passengers to join the club by
paying him a dollar. Windmiller and the others thought it was a
con, and made up their own. Shortly after arriving at
Keesler Field,
Mississippi, the Air Corps closed the program. Those from the
Signal Corps were sent back to
Camp Crowder, Missouri.
Marshall Windmiller ended up in India for the last year and a half
of the war, and never heard about short snorters again.
